What it really means
Behind the word “mixtures” sits a very clear goal in Mexico’s official 3rd-grade program (the SEP curriculum your child follows), and the best part is that it’s solved in your own kitchen. It asks for two things. First, that your child identifies water as a solvent: experimenting with materials like oil, talc, sugar, salt and sand, and classifying them as soluble or insoluble depending on whether they dissolve in water. Second, that they describe where water’s solubility shows up in everyday life and in industry.
The key idea is understanding that a “soluble” material isn’t destroyed and doesn’t vanish when the water takes it. The sugar you no longer see in the glass is still there, spread into pieces so tiny they hide from the naked eye — that’s why the water tastes sweet. Sand and oil, on the other hand, don’t spread that way: sand sinks and oil floats. That difference between what dissolves and what doesn’t is the idea your child carries into class, and they live it every time they sweeten a drink or try to wash off an oil stain (which, tellingly, water alone won’t remove).
Explain it like this
Line up five glasses of water and a teaspoon each of sugar, salt, sand, talc and a few drops of oil. Before mixing, ask them to bet: “which do you think will disappear and which won’t?” Have them record the prediction — that’s exactly how a scientist starts.
Now stir. Sugar and salt give in and vanish: soluble. Sand drops to the bottom, talc clouds the water without dissolving, and oil forms little eyes that float: insoluble. Ask: “did the sugar run out… or is it still there?” Test it — the water is sweet. The taste test proves it’s still present, just spread out.
Close with real life: “why do rehydration drinks come as powder you dissolve in water? Why won’t the oil in the pan wash off with water alone?” That’s where the property connects to home and industry.
Try it today: while cooking, give them two quick challenges: dissolve a spoonful of salt into the soup water (soluble), then try to dissolve a drop of oil in a glass of water (insoluble). Have them tell you which is which and why. Two minutes, no lab required.
